Newport is an old and historic city founded in 1639. It has a rich diverse religious and ethnic history. Spanish and Portugal Jews fleeing persecution settled in Newport in the 1600's, and you can find the oldest synagogue in the western hemisphere, Touro Synagogue, in Newport. At the end of the 1600's the Quakers and Baptists built their houses of worship in Rhode Island. The Catholics held Mass in Rhode Island in the 1780's. Newport was a true melting pot with Spanish, English, Portuguese, Caribbean, Irish, and French living together.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier were married in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newport in 1953. And both President Kennedy and President Eisenhower would spend summers in Newport during their terms in office.
